Is anyone still watching this? It doesn't finish until 2010 but I've watched it from the beginning and I am well and truly hooked ;D

I think I'm gonna make myself look a bit out of touch here, but I have absolutely no idea what Lost is about.
Now, I know I could Google it and appear really informed, but in the interest of promoting discussion, I figured I ask you, Dee, and anyone else who watches it to tell me a little about it and why you like it.
Just so you know how truly limited I am when it comes to TV, I watch just four programmes: The Wire (by some way the best thing ever to grace the screen, in my view - which, since I don't watch a lot nowadays, is probably not a good guide), House (I'm a sucker for flawed geniuses), Boston Legal (more out of habit, since the recent series have dipped a bit in quality), and The Practice (I never caught it when it was first broadcast, so I look out for the repeats).
Other than that, I don't mind Grey's Anatomy and Family Guy, and I have a rather embarrassing habit of enjoying SpongeBob SquarePants.
Pretty much everything else leaves me stone cold.
So, back to Lost - what's the hook?

To be honest, I wouldn't know where to start when trying to explain lost. Basically its about a plane that crashes on an Island and the survivors experience lots of weird things whilst there. They are waiting to be rescued but the rest of the world thinks they are all dead. The Island seems to have been used for experiments but we are still none the wiser to exactly what has gone off there. There's too much info to explain and its confusing, even to me, and I watch it! I'm still addicted to it though

Okay, sounds interesting. A bit of an 'I'm a Celebrity/Lord of the Flies' type thing. Or maybe that's way wide of the mark.
I'll check out the reviews. Has it been running long and, if so, would it be difficult to pick up mid-season?

Steve, I'd suggest you don't start watching it mid-season. The show has been running long and for a while it had a pretty long hiatus in which many of its loyal fans disappeared, including myself. By the time it came on again many didn't recall what had happened so they had to do an entire episode summary of what had happened before the hiatus then they started up the new episodes.
My mother still watches the show and apparently she understands some of the show but even she can't understand it and she use to watch all of the episodes. I tried watching it with her lately and nothing on it made sense, I couldn't figure how they got off the island, what was going on plus they keep going from off the island to back on the island, back and forth, back and forth. Its hard to understand and I don't think anyone should pick up the show right in the middle of the season without prior knowledge of what happened in all the other episodes first.

I tried to watch last night's episode and really struggled with it.
The plot kept flicking backwards and forwards in time with one of the characters apparently searching for a recognisable 'anchor' to provide some sort of continuity between the two time planes.
I might try and watch the next episode but I suspect this might be one of those programmes that is very challenging to pick up mid-season.
