John Terry stated on Sunday that he urges respect plans for referees to be put into action.

Now, when I heard this I laughed as he is one of the worst in the nation of this offense.

Chelsea captain John Terry says he would back plans to stamp out the hounding of referees.
Terry was speaking in light of criticism directed towards Chelsea for their disrespectful behaviour towards Mike Riley on Wednesday night.

It was the latest in a series of incidents which have led for calls to introduce new rules that would only allow captains to speak to referees.

"I think it'll be one of them where I'll have to give it a go," said Terry.

"But if it doesn't work then the FA will have to say no, it isn't working," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme.

Chelsea players surrounded referee Riley appearing to bully him out of red carding Ashley Cole following a late tackle on Alan Hutton during Wednesday's 4-4 draw with Tottenham.

Cole has been widely condemned for his behaviour towards Riley to whom he refused to acknowledge or even look at as the referee attempted to yellow card him.

But Terry has defended the behaviour of the Chelsea players following the incident.

"It is a natural reaction," he said.

"The fans show their frustration and the players do the same because they are passionate about the game.

"I do agree there has to be a line drawn and confronting the referee has to be taken out of the game."

The behaviour of footballers and the standard of tackling has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks but Terry does not believe the game has changed or that challenges or attitudes are getting worse.

"I personally don't think it has got out of hand and I don't think it is any worse than it used to be," he said.

It is just being publicised and spoken about a bit more at the moment.

"These tackles have gone on for years and have never been spoken of before.

"Usually it was just a yellow card and everyone would get on with it. Now it is spoken about on television and publicised in the papers and ex-referees are given their views and the game has moved on a lot."

I personally loath him at the moment. I'm not a violent person but I'd love someone to take his legs out legally.

Some sportsman he is, take the Arsenal V's Chelsea game this weekend for example. Arsenal kick the ball out of play in Chelsea's half when they were on the attack as one of Chelsea's players are down. Chelsea throw the ball to John Terry who kicks the ball out 1 yard from the corner flag in Arsenal's half.

I think this is a huge problem in football. I believe the Chelsea player who went down was Joe Cole. He wasn't injured, and before Arsenal even got the ball back in the Chelsea half he was back on. 1 minute later Chelsea had equalised.

Either players should stop kicking the ball out. Or players should get booked for kicking the ball out where it was not for un-gentlemanly like behaviour.

I would like to see the Football adopt the same attitude towards referees as in Rugby. There's no shortage of passion and committment in Rugby, but they are man enough to treat the refereees decision as final in the overwhelmng majority of cases.

It really irritates me when I see players swarming around the ref like the did in the game between Spurs and Chelsea. The authorities should stamp it out, even if it means amending the rules in order to allow them to take retrospective action - something they argue they coulnd't take against Cole since the situation was 'dealt with' by the ref at the time. Yeah... right.

I agree, Terry is among the worst offenders. But, as the current Chelsea captain, I would suggest that he and he alone should have the right to inquire into - not argue about - the reasons behind a ref's decision.

As for kicking the ball out - I take your point. I was under the impression that there had been a change to the rules such that players couldn't kick the ball out of play until indicated to do so by the ref. Maybe I have that wrong. If this rule hasn't been brought in, then perhaps it should. And perhaps the game should resume with a throw in to the team who put the ball out of play to be taken from the halfway line.

So, in the Arsenal v Chelsea game, for example, Cole goes down, the ref indicates Arsenal should put the ball out of play and, once Cole is dealt with, Arsenal (not Chelsea) have a throw in from the halfway line, regardless of where play was originally stopped.

Or, perhaps players shouldn't kick the ball out in the first place? If Cole was seriously injured then the ref would've stopped the game. Arsenal kicked the ball out when they were 1 nil up on the attack. 1 minute after play resumed it was 1-1.

That's what I'm suggesting - that a team should only be required to kick the ball out of play if specifically directed to do so by the ref. And further, the team that put the ball out of play should be the ones to take the throw in when play resumes.
