Can you imagine the uproar and calls for condemnation had Iran tested a ballistic missile capable of carrying an 'unconventional' payload? Source: ABC NewsPosted Fri Jan 18, 2008 2:45pm
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has issued a warning to the Israeli Government, within hours of Israel announcing that it had test-fired a ballistic missile.
Mr Ahmadinejad says Israel would not dare to attack Iran because of the response it would expect.
Reports in the Israeli media say the missile tested was capable of carrying what is described as an unconventional payload - an apparent reference to a nuclear warhead.
The Israeli military routinely refuses to comment on its missile tests.
In an interview with Al Jazeera TV, the Iranian leader also said Israel "lacks the courage" to launch a strike against the Iranian state.
"They're aware that any attempt at a strike will be confronted by a very strong response," he said.
Mr Ahmadinejad has also accused US President George W Bush of sowing the seeds of division during his recent Middle East visit.
He says Mr Bush had brought a message of confrontation during his tour during which he warned Arab allies that Iran posed a threat.
