What interests me more than the fact Johnson is returning his medal is the fact that he is now the only member of the triumphant 4x400m relay team not to have either confessed to taking drugs or else tested positive. I can't help but find that a tad suspicious. Three out of the four are now known to have been taking drugs but the fastest of all was clean and didn't know about it? Hmmm. ETA: if the other two members of the quartet were found guilty in 2003 and 2004, why has Johnson waited until the third member came out before relinquising his gold medal? Presumably it was tainted well before Pettigrew's confession. Source and full article: BBCFive-times Olympic champion Michael Johnson says he will return the relay gold he won at the Sydney Games after a former team-mate admitted taking drugs.
Antonio Pettigrew, who together with Johnson won 4x400m relay for the United States at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, has admitted taking banned substances.
"I know that the medal was not fairly won and that it is dirty," Johnson told the Daily Telegraph.
"I will be returning it because I don't want it. I feel cheated and betrayed."
